Gabriel dreams all through the night
His broken wings incapable of flight
Try as he might
He never seems able to get it quite right
Gabriel awakes to greet the sun
Stumbles out of bed
And begins to hum
He mumbles then stalls
Never can remember what he’s trying to recall
Gabriel argues with the telephone man
Claims that he just cannot understand
When his phone rings
Why is he unable to hear the song she sings
Gabriel hungry for the fruit of life
Reaches to the branches of his tree of wife
He encounters the truth
His own pride and prejudice has poisoned the very root
Gabriel works hard each day
Trying to see that everything goes his way
Pay him no mind
He has yet to realize that his eyes have gone stone blind
Gabriel again prepares for bed
The wee small hours are what he most dreads
In his sleep
He reaches for her pillow and begins to weep
